Shippers insist for performance clauses in cargo contracts

Exporters and importers want the government to incorporate performance monitoring and penalty clauses while allowing existing private cargo handlers to migrate to a new market-linked tariff regime announced for new projects in July.

This demand has been made by an influential group of exporters and importers shipping their container cargo through Jawaharlal Nehru port, IndiaÂ’s busiest container gateway.

Venkatesh, vice-president of the Western India Shippers Association (WISA), a body representing about 130 exporters and freight forwarders made this request.

Existing terminal operators, however, have made it clear to the government that it would be difficult for them to adhere to the performance parameters on a par with the ones that would apply for new projects due to older equipment and infrastructure bottlenecks.
