ISRO’s GSLV-F17 Launches EOS-05, India’s First Geosynchronous Imaging Satellite

Once operational, EOS05 will deliver nearrealtime imaging of the Indian subcontinent from geosynchronous orbit, enabling persistent monitoring for disaster management, agriculture, forestry, and naturalresource planning.

The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) successfully placed the EOS-05 Earth observation satellite into a Sub-Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (Sub-GTO) about 18 minutes after liftoff at 2:55 am IST on Friday. The launch, aboard the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV)-F17, marked the 19th flight of the GSLV and a major morale boost for the agency following launch setbacks involving the PSLV and GSLV over the last 16 months.

EOS-05, weighing 2,367 kg, is India’s first-ever imaging satellite from geosynchronous orbit. The satellite is designed to provide near-real-time imaging of large areas at frequent intervals, supporting applications, including natural-resource monitoring and disaster management.

ISRO Chairman V. Narayanan said, “I am very happy to announce that the GSLV-F17 vehicle has successfully and precisely injected the advanced EOS-05 geo-imaging satellite into the intended orbit. The health of the satellite is perfectly alright. This is a great achievement for our country’s space programme.”

Once operational, EOS-05 will provide near-real-time imaging of large areas from geosynchronous orbit, enabling frequent observation for applications including disaster management, agriculture, forestry and natural-resource monitoring. Its vantage point, around 36,000 km above Earth, is designed to provide repeated observations of the same broad region at short intervals.

Lt Gen. (Retd) A.K. Bhatt, Director General of the industry body, Indian Space Association (ISpA), noted, “This can be strategically valuable for tracking rapidly evolving weather systems, floods and forest fires, monitoring agriculture and natural resources, and strengthening situational awareness across India’s land and maritime domains. The real opportunity now lies in translating this rich, frequent satellite data into actionable intelligence through India’s private space and geospatial ecosystem.”

This was ISRO’s first successful mission in the current financial year. The agency is targeting six more launches during FY2026-27, including the NVS-03 navigation satellite, while the first uncrewed Gaganyaan mission is targeted for launch during calendar 2026.
