The Tamil Nadu government asked CDM Smith (earlier named as Wilbur Smith Associates) to review the detailed project report it prepared in 2008 for a road project to connect Ennore and L&T Kattupalli ports with the National Highway 5.
Sources from the state government informed that the company would update the feasibility report and fix the alignment with a new topographic survey.
It may be noted that the state government plans to set up the Northern Port Access Road to link both Ennore and L&T Kattupalli ports with the National Highway 5.
The proposed road will facilitate faster evacuation of boxes from both the Kattupalli and Ennore ports which are looking at handling large volumes of containers in future.
The present link of Tiruvottiyur-Ponneri-Panchetti (TPP) and a link through Valur may not be sufficient to handle the future traffic.
The new link road could be used by automobile manufacturers located in Sriperumbur and Oragadam to transport their cargoes meant for export to Ennore port.
The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) wanted to develop this project. However, two of its tenders for the project failed, prompting the state government to step in and take over the project.
