Panel issues directives to AP govt

The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Andhra Pradesh government asked the state government to conduct a socio-economic survey in the areas where ports are proposed to be set up.

Specifically, the committee wants the government to study the kind of dislocation that might cause to the local people because of port projects and if rehabilitation was possible or not.

The committee, which met under the Chairmanship of Revuri Prakash Reddy recently, also issued two more directions to the state government.

These include a direction to state officials to make an assessment of dues owed by the Kakinada seaport to the government. The committee noted that though the port commenced operations more than a decade ago it has not been paying royalties properly to the government.

Another direction from the committee is that the state officials must ensure that the companies, which want to set up ports would not mortgage the land allotted to them by the government to obtain loans from banks.

The committee wants the companies to start construction on the land allotted to them by the government and then only should they be allowed to apply for a loan on the land.
