NIT Trichy´s three-day flagship festival was an event to remember

The three-day flagship techno-managerial festival of NIT Trichy, Pragyan, was formally declared open on February 25, 2016. Keerthi Vasan, Chairman, Pragyan ´16 presented the Pragyan report. He spoke about the various activities that have been conducted leading up to the festival. Dr. Srinivasan Sundarrajan, Director of NITT, spoke about the various milestones achieved by the team and wished Pragyan all success in the current edition. Solaikutty Dhanabal, guest of honour, Academic Project Manager, National Instruments, took the stage next and spoke about the importance of such technical festivals in fostering the collaboration between corporate organisations, faculty and students. Krishnamachari Srikkanth, an integral member of the 1983 World Cup winning team, was the special guest for the day. Commander KS Nathan, Vice President, Defence Ship Building Strategic Business Unit, Larsen and Toubro, spoke about the importance of collaboration between institutes and the industry.

February 26, day 1, witnessed a plethora of programmes, ranging from events, workshops, guest lectures to infotainment events, and much more. The day started with a guest lecture by Ravi Nawal, a management consultant, and author of the bestseller, ¨India Can¨. The events conducted throughout the day saw active and enthusiastic participation from students of various colleges and industries. The Texas Instruments TM4C-UC workshop, helped participants acquire a first-hand experience of ARM Cortex based micro-controller applications. The day also witnessed the commencement of the exclusive intra-NITT initiative of Pragyan -´Sangam´ which saw participation from 33 teams.

The ISRO exhibition was an impressive affair, with models of all the major spacecraft that India has ever created. Girasomnis, a projection dance troupe based in Spain, left everyone spellbound with a unique fusion of contemporary dance, video art and instrumental music, thereby beautifully blending technology and art.

February 27, day 2 at Pragyan started with a guest lecture by Sudhir Kumar Mishra, CEO and MD of India´s premier missile programme, BRAHMOS. A major crowd-puller was the lecture of Gianni di Caro, a senior researcher at IDSIA, the Swiss Artificial Intelligence lab. ´Quadcombat´, an event sponsored by TCS, tested the quads piloted by the participants based on speed, navigating check points and their ability to intercept obstacles.

This year´s Crossfire witnessed Abhinandan Sekhri, Co-founder and CEO of Newslaundry, Nawshir Mirza, a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India and a Partner of S. R. Batliboi & Co. Board at Calcutta, and Bahar Dutt, Former Environmental Editor, CNN IBN, Anoop Poonia, an outstanding Programme Officer from Climate Action Network (CAN), Dr. A Ravindra, head of Centre for Sustainable Development, and Chellapandi engage in a fierce battle of words.

The principal guest lectures on the third day were by Abhas Mitra and Dr. Archana Sharma. Dr. Mitra focused on his work pertaining to black holes and the Big Bang. Another highlight was the alumni crossfire in which NIT alumni were called together in an on-stage debate on ¨Life at NIT Trichy: Then and Now¨.

The three-day flagship, internationally acknowledged techno-managerial festival of NIT Trichy, Pragyan, ended on February 28 with a valediction ceremony which had Dr. Archana Sharma, Senior Scientist at CERN, presiding as the Chief Guest. Ajay Immanuel, Treasurer of Pragyan ´16, concuded with the vote of thanks, where he expressed his immense gratitude to all the teams whose contribution made all of this possible and set expectations soaring for the next edition of Pragyan.
