Centre to upgrade A’bad airport’s runway for Airbus 380

To upgrade the runway of the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad the Union Ministry of Civil Aviation has earmarked Rs 50 crore. With the runway upgradation the world’s biggest passenger aircraft Airbus-380 can land in the airport in the near future.

The fund has been earmarked as part of the modernisation project of six airports in the state, including Ahmedabad, Vadodara, Surat, Rajkot, Jamnagar and Bhanvanagar. The Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation KC Venugopal stated in the Rajya Sabha that a total of Rs 322 crore would be spent on these airports under the 12th Five Year Plan (2012-2017).

Venugopal also stated that a new control tower-cum-technical block, apron and a new cargo complex would be constructed among others at the Ahmedabad airport. Airport officials said that most of the provisions announced by the Minister deals with the master plan of the airport.
