Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar said that his ministry would take up the project of building a road along Mumbai's Western sea fronton priority. He further claimed he will discuss vital projects affecting the city with Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan.

A Joint Technical Committee set up at the insistence of the Maharashtra Chief Minister had in January 2012 recommended reclamation of the sea to build a coastal freeway which it claimed would help save Rs 12,000 cr of public money compared to capital intensive sea links. The 35.6 km coastal road was to extend from Nariman Point till the far western suburb of Kandivli and would cost around Rs 8,000 crore.

The state has estimated that nearly 9.8 km portion of the sea will have to be reclaimed for the project and hence will require clearance from the Union Ministry of Environment and Forests and other government agencies.
