Union Defence Ministry agreed to provide 50 to 70 acre of land to the civil aviation ministry to build a new terminal building in the Agra airport. This information was given by the Union Civil Aviation Minister Ajit Singh after having a discussion with Defence Minister AK Antony recently.
Civil Aviation Ministry needed land from the Defence Ministry because the airport is under control of the latter and it comprises one of the largest airbase for the Indian Air Force. The proposed terminal may enhance the passenger handling capacity of the airport and it may benefit the large number of tourists who visit the city. According to an estimate, around 80 lakh tourists visited the city in 2012. Incidentally, very few airlines fly to Agra because of the absence of proper infrastructure.
