Media reports indicate that Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor Development Corporation (DMICDC) decided to shelve plans to develop the Dighi port industrial area owing to issues in land acquisition.
Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC), which is acquiring land on behalf of DMICDC for the project, has reportedly received mixed response from land owing farmers.
MIDC was to acquire over 6,000 hectare of land in the first phase. Even when some were willing to provide the land, politicians were not in favour of the project, reports indicate.
Protestors against land acquisition allege that the project may have destroyed the lives of over 20,000 people in 78 villages, as they would have lost all their land.
Since farming was deeply linked with other means of livelihood in the area, it would have destroyed the rural economy of areas around Mangaon taluk in Raigad district, they allege.
The Chairman of Dighi Port Ltd, Vijay Kalantri, has reportedly said the industrial townships could have led to infrastructure development and linked all the neighbouring industrial areas to Dighi port.
Mahajan added that a number of industrial projects were set up in Raigad district and many people lost their lands.
