Bangladesh government received response from governments of only a few countries for funding its proposed deep sea-port project at Sonadia in Cox’s Bazar district.
Earlier, the Bangladesh government invited proposal from
countries for participating in the port project. Proposals were sought from countries like India, China the United States of America, the United Arab Emirates, the Netherlands, Denmark and Germany for the proposed port.
It is found that of the countries that responded to the invitation, most of them suggested involving their respective private sector in funding the project.
But this is not in line with Bangladesh’s proposal for construction of the port on government-to-government (G-to-G) basis.
Following this, the Bangladesh government is considering to secure funds from both public and private sectors for the project. At a review meeting of these proposals, the Bangladesh government decided that funding proposals from foreign governments and their private sectors will be accepted.
It is learnt that Denmark has proposed that Maersk Line, a top global container service provider, can invest in deep-sea port construction on behalf of the country. Besides, many other interested countries have forwarded the names of some of their private sector companies to fund the construction works of the project.
