The Minister of Petroleum & Natural Gas M Veerappa Moily informed the Lok Sabha recently that for transporting natural gas across the length and breadth of the country, a cross-country pipeline network is being laid throughout the country.

Presently, there are around 11,500 km of natural gas pipelines across the country and another 12,650 km of pipeline infrastructure is under various stages of implementation.

Moily also said that Petroleum & Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) has envisaged a phased roll out plan of City Gas Distribution (CGD) network development in several Geographical Areas (GAs) covering more than 300 cities or towns in various states on the basis of Expressions of Interest (EOI) submitted to the Board and on suo moto basis.

Depending on the natural gas pipeline connectivity or gas availability, PNGRB includes these GAs in a phased manner in the bidding rounds for grant of authorization to develop CGD networks, he added.

The government has set up a Petroleum & Natural Gas Regulatory Board (PNGRB) under PNGRB Act, 2006 as a regulatory body to authorize and monitor the development of pipeline infrastructure and CGD network in the country.
