Designed to deliver seamless, end-to-end digital solutions—from booking to doorstep—APT bridges urban ambition with rural reach, redefining service delivery across India’s vast postal network.
In a landmark move towards digital transformation, India’s Department of Posts has completed the nationwide rollout of IT 2.0 – Advanced Postal Technology (APT), a ₹58 billion ($700 million) upgrade aimed at modernising operations across its vast network of 165,000 post offices. The initiative aligns with the central government’s Digital India and Make in India missions, bringing faster, more reliable, and citizen-centric services to every corner of the country.
Developed indigenously by the Centre for Excellence in Postal Technology (CEPT), the APT platform builds on the success of the earlier IT Modernisation Project 1.0. It introduces a microservices-based architecture, hosted on the government’s MeghRaj 2.0 cloud and supported by BSNL’s nationwide connectivity backbone. The system is designed to deliver seamless, end-to-end digital solutions—from booking to delivery—across both urban and rural India.
Union Minister of Communications Jyotiraditya Scindia, announcing the launch on platform X, stated, “Elated to announce the nationwide rollout of Advanced Postal Technology (APT) by @IndiaPostOffice, a historic leap in Bharat’s digital journey. Backed by an investment of ₹5800 Cr under IT 2.0, APT will transform India Post into a world-class public logistics organisation.”
APT introduces several next-generation features, including QR-code-enabled payments, OTP-based delivery authentication, and a unified user interface for improved customer experience. The system also incorporates a 10-digit alphanumeric DIGIPIN to enhance delivery accuracy, alongside robust reporting and analytics capabilities. Its open API architecture and cloud-ready deployment ensure scalability and resilience, even in remote regions.
Structured Rollout
The rollout was executed in a phased and structured manner. Following a successful pilot in the Karnataka Postal Circle during May-June, the system was refined and gradually extended to all 23 postal circles. By August 4, over 170,000 units, including post offices, mail centres, and administrative offices, were live on the APT platform.
Recognising that technology adoption hinges on workforce readiness, India Post trained more than 460,000 employees using a cascade model under the ‘Train, Retrain, Refresh’ framework, ensuring smooth implementation and operational continuity nationwide.
The platform has already demonstrated its capacity, successfully processing over 3.2 million bookings and 3.7 million deliveries in a single day. With IT 2.0 now complete, India Post reaffirms its role as a modern, technology-driven logistics and financial services provider, while continuing to uphold its legacy of trust and unmatched reach.
