Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) faces protest from local farmers for its 114-km oil pipeline project being undertaken at a cost of Rs 98 crore from its refinery located at Narimanam to Tiruchy storage point.
The pipeline laying project faces protest from farmers of Kakka Kottur, Sorakkudi, Moongilkudi and Omankulam
villages in Tiruvarur district because they fear loss of livelihood owing to pollution.
The farmers said the pipelines should not run through farm lands. They assembled at Kakka Kottur village where the pipe laying work for the project of was progressing, and stopped the staff from operating heavy earth-moving machines and cranes.
The staged a demonstration in front of the machinery used for levelling the ground, digging and laying of pipes. The protest was led by PS Masilamani, Tiruvarur District Secretary, TamilNadu Vivasayigal Sangam, owing allegiance to the CPI. Kalimuthu, district treasurer, Agricultural Labourers Union (BKMU) was among those who participated.
When the District Collector S Natarajan held talks with the agitating farmers, and asked their representatives to sit for talks, the protest was withdrawn.
