In order to make its proposed fourth container terminal project more attractive to bidders, Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT) plans to boost connectivity infrastructure at the port.
The port authority plans to upgrade its approach roads and rail connectivity to make the project more attractive to the private operators.
The upgradation of infrastructure is expected to reduce the cost of the terminal project, which is estimated to cost Rs 9,300 crore. The project was delayed after a consortium of Port of Singapore and ABG ports decided to withdraw from the project after winning the bid.
The port authority wants to implement the terminal project on a Public-Private Partnership where the port develops the infrastructure and allows private players to operate the terminal. But the project is delayed by more than three years.
In another initiative to attract bidders, the port decided to split the project into two with equal capacity and key length. According to the original plan, the fourth terminal was to have a capacity of 4.8 million teu and a berth of 2 km in length.
In addition, JNPT will also allow companies to bid for both the projects, a change from the earlier regime when companies could not bid for multiple projects as it was not allowed under the anti-monopoly guidelines.
