Kandla port handles 56 mn t import cargo

So far in 2012-13, Kandla Port Trust handled 56.29 million tonne (mn t) of import cargo compared with 60.1 mn t in the year-ago period.

The port handled total exports of 26.41 mn t so far in 2012-13 compared to 22.09 mn t in the year-ago period. The volume of transshipment cargo was 1.69 lakh tonne, which is, lower than 3.09 lakh tonne in the comparable period of last year.

The volume of dry cargo including containers was 28.42 mn t (28.79 mn t) and liquid cargo 8.65 mn t (9.66 mn t), the release added.

The total cargo handled by Kandla Port Trust has already exceeded last fiscalÂ’s figure of 82.5 million tonne and it stands at 82.87 mn t.

This has been achieved despite several adverse factors such as the closure of the dry cargo berth (CJ 6) owing to ongoing civil work and poor performance of the container terminal whose operator was served with a termination notice, reports suggest.
