The Karnataka government has taken note of the bad condition of the roads in the State and assured its Public Works Department (PWD) to provide more funds to repair and maintain them. PWD constructs and maintain majority of roads in the state. Since a long time the State PWD had been facing paucity of funds for road works.
The PWD has said that major district roads (MDRs) are the main concern for it. The sources in PWD said that while at least Rs 1 lakh per km is required for annual maintenance of major district roads which are single-lane ones, the government, hitherto, provided only a quarter of it, at Rs 25,000 a km. The department has made it clear that with such a meagre amount it has
become impossible to maintain roads in good condition
On the other hand, the maintenance grant for State Highways (two-lane roads) is about Rs 1 lakh a km while in reality at least Rs 2 lakh a km is required, officials in the PWD said.
