Widening of the Banerji Road in Kochi city will be taken up by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) on February 18 as part of the next phase of preparatory works for Kochi Metro. The contractors engaged for the road work have already started mobilising resources required to execute the work.
According to the Metro agency, they will begin barricading the road on February 13, starting from St Antony’s Higher Secondary School at Kacheripady junction. The stretch of the road between North railway overbridge (ROB) and Madhava Pharmacy Junction will be widened.
The road will be widened on both sides since the viaduct of Metro would pass through the middle. The widening of Banerji Road will be carried out by a group of contractors and will cost about Rs 9 crore. The contract was awarded two years ago and it was extended due to the delay in land acquisition, said a DMRC spokesperson.
Kochi Metro Rail (KMRL) sources said that the compound wall and water tank of the school would be pulled down to facilitate road widening. But a school representative claimed they were yet to receive compensation for their land handed over to Metro authorities.
