Krishnapatnam Port, which is 25 km east of Nellore, Andhra Pradesh, handled 456 vessels until December 2012. The port handled 428 vessels and 15.41 million tonne of cargo in 2011-12 as against 417 vessels and 15.91 million tonnes in 2010-11.

The port was inaugurated in July 2008 and is promoted by the Hyderabad-based CVR Group. The container terminal began operations in 2012, which will save costs and improve logistics in export-import operations.

Once the terminal is fully developed with a capacity of 1.2 million TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit), the port can handle containers up to the size of 14,000 TEU.

The Krishnapatnam port was started as a bulk cargo port in 2009. At present, 10 berths are operational. When its three phases are completed by 2017 or 2018, there will be a total of 42 berths.

It is an all-weather port which will be operational for 365 days a year. Work on the second phase is progressing and is likely to be completed in 2014. More than $1 billion has already been invested; the total investment for the whole project is likely to reach $3 billion.

Anil Yendluri, Chief Executive Officer, Krishnapatnam Port expects that the port may become the biggest port in Asia in the course of time. It will catalyse the industrial and economic growth of the region, he said.
