The ultra-large container ship MSC Valeria, having a capacity of 14,000 twenty feet equivalent unit (TEUs), recently called at the new container terminal of the Mundra port.
TEUs, or twenty feet equivalents, are the standard units for quantifying cargoes at the container ships. The ship has an overall length of 365.5 metre (1,199.2 feet) and Mundra port is said to be the first in the country to handle such a large vessel. None of the ports in the country has ever handled such a large container ship, reports suggest.
The container vessel, owned by Switzerland-based MSC Mediterranean Shipping Company, was put into service last year. It is currently plying between China and West Mediterranean. The vessel has two large berths alongside water depths of 17.5 metre.
Mundra Port is APSEZ’s flagship port and had handled 82.13 million tonne (mn t) of cargo and 1.74 million TEUs of container volume in the last fiscal.
It has a total cargo handling capacity of 200 MT per annum and also operates two container terminals with an annual capacity of about 2.5 million TEUs.
