Bangladesh government sought clarification from the Indian government about the proposed container port project in Narayanganj by the bank of the Shitalakhya river.
Narayanganj is a crucial port facility on the outskirts of Dhaka which is also used by Indian cargo vessels under the India-Bangladesh water transport protocol. It is learnt that the Bangladesh government was not aware of the project until it saw the tender for the same.
In 2011, Container Corporation of India (CONCOR) received a proposal from Bangladesh’s Kumudini Welfare Trust to build the terminal on its 46 acre land along the river under a joint venture.
Since the project falls in a foreign country, CONCOR is required to engage with India’s Commerce or External Affairs Ministry (MEA) for proceeding with the project. The MEA initiated the process for conducting the feasibility study.
At a recent meeting between an Indian envoy and the Bangladesh’s Foreign Secretary Shahidul Haque, the former assured the latter that India would abide by the inter-country protocols for the construction of the project.
The Indian envoy said no decision was made so far for the CONCOR investment for the project. The envoy said any such decision would be taken following the laws of Bangladesh and exhausting the due inter country procedures.
