Recently, a gearless post-panamax vessel arrived at Dighi Port carrying coal and this is said to be the largest bulk carrier to call the port and one of the largest vessels to call any port in Maharashtra.
On January 5, 2013, the vessel ‘MV Maverick Guardian’ having a LOA of 229 meters, a Deadweight Tonnage (DWT) of 82,739 million tonne and carrying steam coal berthed Dighi Port. This is the largest bulk carrier to call Dighi Port and one of the largest vessels to call any port in Maharashtra.
Two Gottwald Mobile Harbour Cranes carried out discharge operation for the vessel. The cargo was distributed in all seven hatches of the vessel and the port was able to achieve an average discharge rate of more than 1,000 mn t per hour.
The cargo handling and inter port carting operation was carried out by Sunrise Marine and the vessel agent was Scorpio Shipping Agencies. Successful evacuation of coal from the port by road has also commenced.
Dighi Port is being developed by Balaji Infra Projects (BIPL) and is the first and the largest Greenfield port of Maharashtra.
It is being developed as a multipurpose, multi-cargo, all-weather port with deep draught, direct berthing facilities and modern cargo handling equipments with adequate stack yards and warehousing facilities, back up areas with an ample land bank of approximately 1,600 acre.
