Reports suggest that the Mormugao Port Trust (MPT), which is losing considerable cargo traffic in recent months, requested the central government for help to tide over the crisis.
The port has been losing iron ore export traffic following a court order banning iron ore mining in Goa. Export of iron ore and pellets account for nearly 80 percent the portÂ’s total traffic.
In 2010-11, the share of iron ore traffic was a little more than 40 million tonne (mn t), out of the total traffic of 50 mn t. In 2011-12, the corresponding figures were 39 mn t and 29.21 mn t, respectively.
The financial condition of the port deteriorated so much that the employees have been encouraged to leave the port by opting for voluntary retirement scheme.
