Media reports indicate that the Mumbai Port Trust (MbPT) may earn Rs 10 crore rent from the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) for leasing
a 2,200-sq-m plot on Reay Road for 30 years.

MbPT would allot the land on a licence basis to the civic body for the proposed stormwater pumping station at the Britannia Outfall at RetiBunder on Reay Road.

BMC wants to set up the station to resolve the water-logging issue at Hindmata, Nana Chowk in Grant Road, Dr BA Road in Byculla and NM Joshi Road in Lower Parel.

Even as BMC received informal approval from the port trust for using the land, it had subsequently deferred the decision at least six times since July 2009.

The proposal states that no damage will be caused to the underground services of MbPT and if any damage is detected, it should be rectified by MbPT at the BMC’s cost. The BMC has been told to take requisite environmental nods and permission from the traffic department.
