In Karnataka, the proposed four-lane road project from Hassan to BC Road on National Highway 48 is expected to give the much-needed relief for the nightmarish experience on the 37 km Shiradi Ghat stretch between Bangalore and Mangalore. The Rs 2,038 crore crore project has been scaled down to Rs 673.43 crore and will be taken under National Highway Development Project (NHDP) IV B package.

The Shiradi Ghat section— Maranahalli to Gundya which is roughly 26 km in length— has been included in the project for rigid pavement (concrete road). The package will take about 18 months for completion after getting the Public-Private Participation Approval Committee (PPPAC) approval. This means that coastal region could finally get good connectivity to the state capital in about 24 months to 30 months, provided the ministry of environment and forest (MoEF) gives clearance to acquire additional forest land required for the project on the Shiradi Ghat section.

The four-lane road will reduce the distance between Hassan-BC Road by more than six kilometers. It will have two bypasses— one at Sakleshpur and another at Ballupete in Hassan district— according to the feasibility study prepared by Feedback Ventures for the project. The consultancy charges were about Rs 1.76 crore.
