The New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) handled 12.83 million tonne (mn t) of imported crude oil for Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals (MRPL) during Apr-Feb 2012-13 compared to 11.97 mn t in the year-ago period.
NMPT handled 1.49 mn t of iron ore fines during the first 11 months of the financial year for KIOCL, which operates an iron ore pellet manufacturing unit in Mangalore. This is more than the 1 mn t fines handled in the corresponding period of the earlier financial.
The handling of iron ore fines by Kudremukh Iron Ore Company (KIOCL) increased 49 percent during the period.
The port handled 2.24 mn t coal (1.27 mn t) for Udupi Power Corporation (UPCL), and 4.07 mn t (2.13 mn t) for users in hinterland areas. Based in Udupi district, UPCL operates a 1,200 mw thermal power plant.
The coal cargo handling has seen a jump of 85.88 percent. The port handled a total of 6.32 mn t (3.40 mn t) of coal during the period.
Because of the rise in the volume of key cargoes, the port exceeded the total cargo traffic handling of 2011-12 in the first 11 months of 2012-13. The port handled 33.61 million tonnes (mn t) of cargo throughout April-February of 2012-13 as against 29.76 mn t in the corresponding period of the earlier fiscal, recording a growth of 12.93 percent.
