Cargo handling by the New Mangalore Port (NMPT) rose 13.08 per cent to 30.08 million tonne between April 1, 2012 and January 29, 2013 from 26.6 mn t in the year-ago period.
With this, the port exceeded the cargo handling target set by the shipping ministry for the first 10 months of 2012-13.
The port attributed the growth in cargo to the increase in the handling of coal, maize, container cargoes, and crude and products by Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals during the period.
P Tamilvanan, Chairman of NMPT said the port could reach this stage despite the sudden shortfall to the tune of eight million tonne of iron ore traffic owing to mining ban. The container traffic registered a growth of 3.75 per cent during the period.
During 2011-12, the port handled 32.94 mn t of cargo.
