The New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) is making efforts to woo importers and exporters from the neighbouring regions.

For example, recently the port officials held consultations with exporters from Shimoga region in this regard. The officials urged the importers and exporters of Shimoga to utilise the facilities available at New Mangalore Port.

Shimoga Chamber of Commerce and Industry also remarked that there was good potential for NMPT to explore from Shimoga region.

Mangalore port was declared ninth major port in the country in 1974 and handles export of oil products, iron ore pellets and iron ore fines, granite stone, containerized cargo and import of oil for Hindustan Petroleum and Bharat Petroleum, LPG, fertilizers, coal, limestone, cement and other containerized cargo.

In 2011-12, it imported goods of 236.4 lakh tonne and exported only 92.56 lakh tonne of goods.

Meanwhile, a recent survey by Association Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM) reveals that number of employees has shrunk in New Mangalore port from 2,400 to just over 1,700.
