NMPT registers a growth of 12.25% in cargo

In the first five months of 2013-14, the New Mangalore Port (NMPT) recorded a growth of 12.25 per cent in cargo handling. The port handled 15.76 million tonne of cargo from April-August as against 14.04 million tonne in the corresponding period of the previous fiscal (2012-13). Crude oil and coal contributed to the growth in port’s cargo handled during the period, said the port’s Chairman P Tamilvanan.

NMPT handled 5.78 million tonne (5.30 million tonne) of imported crude oil for Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals (MRPL) during the first five months.

MRPL is one of the major users of the port. From MRPL, during the period, there was also increase in the export of petroleum products. The port handled 3.20 million tonne (2.63 million tonne) of export cargo of MRPL.
