NMPT’s cargo handling grows 12.44% in FY13

During 2012-13, cargo handling at the New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) grew 12.44 per cent to 37.04 million tonne (mn t) from 32.94 mn t in 2011-12.

Cargo volume in the port received a boost from the increase in the handling of crude oil, petroleum products, coal and container cargoes, the port said.

According to P Tamilvanan, Chairman of NMPT, this is the highest quantity of traffic ever handled at the port. . During the year, the port handled 14.21 mn t (13.08 mn t) of crude oil, and 7.82 mn t (6.64 mn t) of petroleum products for Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals (MRPL).

Volume of coal cargo handled at the port rose around 71 per cent to 6.91 mn t for various industries in its hinterland from 4.02 mn t of coal in the previous year. The industries serviced by the port include a thermal-based power plant — Udupi Power Corporation – in the neighbouring Udupi district.

During 2012-13, the port handled 48,409 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) of containers against 45,009 in the previous fiscal.

It is learnt that a mainline vessel operator showed interest to operate a mainline service on New Mangalore-Karachi-Jabel Ali-Mombasa route.

He said that NMPT, with Kannur Chamber of Commerce and Industry, had conducted a trade meet at Kannur in north Kerala last year.
