Government is not working on any proposal to generate power using tidal waves, Piyush Goyal, Minister of Power, Coal and New & Renewable said. About the government study on the potential of tidal energy, he said that ¨at Vizhinjam, the first oscillating water column was built in 1991 to study the feasibility of harnessing wave energy. Due to lower generation, the plant was completely decommissioned and found techno-commercially not viable.¨

To capture sufficient power from tidal energy, the height of the high tide must be at least 5 meters (16 feet) greater than at low tides.
