Government is not working on any proposal to generate power using tidal waves, Piyush Goyal, Minister of Power, Coal and New & Renewable said. About the government study on the potential of tidal energy, he said that ĆĀØat Vizhinjam, the first oscillating water column was built in 1991 to study the feasibility of harnessing wave energy. Due to lower generation, the plant was completely decommissioned and found techno-commercially not viable.ĆĀØ
To capture sufficient power from tidal energy, the height of the high tide must be at least 5 meters (16 feet) greater than at low tides.
