In Odisha, the all-weather Gopalpur port’s first trial shipment took place a few days ago. An estimated 7,500 tonne of ilmenite, a sand mineral of Indian Rare Earths, was loaded on to a Chinese ship for shipment to Korea.
The Odisha Government in a Gazette notification has declared the port is ready for commercial operation.
However, the port will undertake a couple of more trial shipments before throwing it open for regular operation. It is said that the port authorities were scouting for various other types of cargo for future shipments.
Built at a cost of about Rs 900 crore, Gopalpur port is now ready with one berth with two others under construction, each of around 230 metre, totalling 30 million tonne capacity.
