Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) is a mixture of commercial butane and commercial propane having saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons. It is gaseous at normal atmospheric pressure, but may be condensed to the liquid state at normal temperature, by the application of moderate pressures. Although they are normally used as gases, they are stored and transported as liquids under pressure for convenience and ease of handling.

Liquid LPG evaporates to produce about 250 times volume of gas. Thus, a large quantity of energy can be packed, stored, transported and used in small containers.

Oil Marketing Companies (OMCs) seek the service of transporters to ferry LPG cylinders from bottling plant to various places of consumption. For example, state-run OMC Indian Oil plans to engage a contractor for loading and unloading of LPG cylinders in the bottling plant at Calicut.

The Hyderabad unit of Indian Oil also seeks to hire a contractor for transportation of auto LPG or bulk LPG by road in tank trucks from loading locations at various LPG dispensing station.

Another state-run OMC Hindustan Petroleum Corporation is looking out for a contractor for transportation of LPG cylinders by open trucks from Chandrapur LPG bottlling plant in Maharashtra.
