The first Liebherr mobile harbour crane was delivered to India in 2004. Seven additional deliveries in the same year marked the beginning of a success story. Since then Liebherr crane population in India has grown steadily. In 2006, remarkable 20 LHMs already proved their outstanding mobility and performance in India. By now, even more than 60 LHMs load and unload cargo in Indian ports. Especially in recent years annual total order quantity remained at a continuous high level.

Approximately 90 per cent of all Liebherr mobile harbour cranes delivered to Indian customers are operated in four rope configuration. This highlights the importance of bulk handling for the Indian ports. Regarding bulk handling, Liebherr mobile harbour cranes are mighty tools. In July 2011, Krishnapatnam Port Company Ltd set a record for unloading coal with mobile harbour cranes. Liebherr’s state-of-the-art machines discharged 106,171 tonne of steam coal in just 24 hours. This record surpassed Krishnapatnam’s previous record of discharging 95,528 tonne in 24 hours.

In April 2012, two Liebherr portal cranes of Adani Petronet Dahej Port Pvt Ltd (APPPL) broke the old record for coal discharging. As much as 60,077 tonne of coal were unloaded in just 24 hours with two LPS 600 cranes, the award winning model in the category “Crane of the Year” at the International Bulk Journal Awards 2011.

To minimise exhaust gas pollution, a large number of Liebherr’s mobile harbour cranes in India are equipped with Liebherr’s electric drive (E-Drive). This alternative drive system allows for eco-friendly land-based power supply.
