Discom's turnaround agent

An Engineering and MBA Alumnus of Delhi University, Ramesh Narayanan, the CEO of BSES Yamuna Power Limited (BYPL), comes with 28 years of experience in the power sector. Ramesh Narayanan has been the CEO of BYPL since October 2009. BYPL is the power distribution utility serving the most densely populated areas of East and Central Delhi.

Prior to BSES, he served with NTPC, PFC and EDF’s Indian subsidiary from 1983-2002.

As CEO, Ramesh Narayanan’s responsibilities include leading a 6,000 member BYPL team to achieve the targets. On his management style, he says he loves to engage and interact with the people in his organisation, “so that collectively we can deliver our best endeavours to our over 12 lakh customers.”

Being part of the team responsible for the turnaround of the Delhi power distribution scenario has been one of his most memorable and fulfilling assignments. It has been a huge challenge to turn a loss making, outdated discom into a world-class utility recognised worldwide, Narayanan says.

In the past 10 years, BYPL invested over Rs 2,000 crore with an increase of 63 per cent in the customer base. Its biggest achievement has been the network enhancement leading to 100 per cent electrification and 100 per cent metering in its distribution area.

Apart from the responsibilities at BYPL, Ramesh Narayanan is the Chairman of Transmission & Distribution Committee in PHD Chamber of Commerce and a member of CII – Committee on Energy.

Away from work, Narayanan loves to play computer games and listens to soothing music.
