A high-powered committee of the Bangladesh government is studying the proposals received from various foreign governments and overseas private sector companies for funding and constructing the proposed deep-sea port at Sonadia in Cox’s Bazar.

The committee will examine the strengths and expertise of the companies and governments who submitted proposal for assisting the project.

The committee earlier decided that alongside the proposals from the governments, also those from the overseas private sector would be considered for implementation of the proposed project.

The Bangladesh government plans to seek assistance for component-specific areas relating to the proposed project.

The government has reportedly received views from China, the Netherlands, among others. The committee may get views from other countries, which have submitted the proposals formally.

The government is planning to form a consortium to fund the construction of the port project. Shipping minister if Bangladesh government made a request to China to join the consortium if it is formed for the construction of the port.

The proposed port is considered strategically important to Bangladesh for handling properly the increasing load of cargoes.
