The four-member committee, appointed by the National Green Tribunal to study the functioning of the copper smelting plant of Sterlite Industries at Tuticorin, would submit its report on April 29.

The panel will consist of two members from the Tribunal and one each from Sterlite Industries and Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB).

On March 30, the TNPCB ordered the closure of the plant as it is alleged to be posing health hazards. Local public was demanding the closure of the plant by claiming that they were affected in the wake of alleged gas leak.

The Vedanta Group company had sought a stay on the closure order of the board. The Supreme Court had earlier this month asked the company to pay Rs 100 crore compensation for polluting the environment through its copper smelting plant but refused to direct its closure.

The TNPCB’s direction on shutting down the plant will not be affected by the apex court’s judgement.

Sterlite Industries had said its plant has adhered to required safety norms and posed no health hazard.
