VOC Port handles 286.42 lakh tonne in 2013-14
VO Chidambaranar (VOC) Port in Tuticorin handled a throughput of 286.42 lakh tonne during the financial year 2013-14, surpassing the pre-ĂÂĄvious year's achievement of 282.60 lakh tonne and registered a growth of 1.35 per cent, in spite of global cues. Imports accounted for 209.77 lakh tonne and exports accounted for 76.65 lakh tonne.
New custom norms at Tuticorin port concern traders
A recent public notice by Tuticorin Customs giving more responsibilities to the operators of 13-odd container freight stations (CFSs) at the port has caused concern among traders. Stakeholders say it would make the operating procedure more complex and take away the advantages the export-import trade currently enjoys here.
Floating cranes at VOC port
The VO Chidambaranar Port Trust, Tuticorin, has issued a letter of intent (LI) for grant of licence for deployment of floating cranes at the portĂ´s water limits for 10 years for handling cargo in vessels at the anchorage, transport of cargo through barges and handling cargo at shore. The port trust has issued the LI to Seaport Logistics.
Coal and Oil gets Rs.1,600 cr bank fund
To complete its 1,200 MW independent power plant (IPP), presently under construction in Tuticorin, Dubai-based Coal and Oil (C and O) Group has secured additional funding of approximately Rs 1,600 crore from Indian public sector banks including the State Bank of India. The power project, which is being developed at a cost of around Rs 6,800 crore is developed by Coastal Energen, the power generating flagship company of the Coal & Oil Group.
Rise in VO Chidambaram Port’s coal imports
In VO Chidambaranar Port (VOC) in Tuticorin, coal imports surged at with a cargo volume of 106,17,791 million tonne (mt) handled in 2012-13. With this, the volume the port handled has surpassed the past record of 92,76,356 mt in the earlier year.
Tech, manpower, containerisation boost efficiency
Experts say that while it may be unfair to compare one port's efficiency level with another's, internal factors like the level of investment in mechanisation, and others including containerisation and availability of skilled labour are impacting port operations.
Tuticorin may soon get the Export Excellence Town tag
Tamil Naudu's Tuticorin town is all set to secure the title, ĂâTown of Export Excellence for Marine products.Ăâ And for this, the Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Tuticorin has been striving to earn the recognition for the town. Seafood exporters were looking forward to the recognition award to boost exports. Production and export of frozen seafood from Tuticorin Port had crossed Rs 1,000 crore, to earn the status of ĂâTown of Export ExcellenceĂâ in marine products.
