Minister for Industries of Tamil Nadu government P Thangamani informed the state assembly that the 6 million tonne first phase of the petroleum refinery project by Nagarjuna Oil Corporation would be operationalised by 2014.
Nagarjuna Oil Corporation proposed to set up a 12 million tonne a year refinery project in Cuddalore for about Rs 22,000 crore. This is said to be one of the state’s largest private sector project.
The first phase of the project will have 6 mn t capacity, the minister said while placing the Department’s Policy Note in the State Assembly.
The project will make Tamil Nadu self-sufficient in petroleum fuels. The refinery includes a captive port and a power plant.
The project was planned in July 2001 but work started in 2006 after getting all the clearance. The centre declared Nagarjuna’s Cuddalore project as the anchor unit for its Petroleum, Chemicals and Petrochemicals Investment Region in the Cuddalore-Nagapattinam region.
This project will refine 6 million metric tonne of crude petroleum per year (mn mtpa) in Phase-I, and will primarily meet the growing energy needs of southern India. The project site is spread over an area of 2,100 acre.
