The Poovar-Pozhikkara region is an ideal location for the proposed ship building and repair yard, suggested ‘Thiruvananthapuram Coastal View’, a forum for the development of the capital city of Kerala.
Therefore, the forum urged the state government to recommend the region, which is a nearby beach resort of Thiruvananthapuram, as the site for the yard project.
The coastal waters in the area has a natural depth of 30 metre and the location is close to international shipping lane. Therefore, ships can be brought to the yard with minimum detour, the forum said quoting various studies.
Availability of land is also not a problem as government itself has around 120 acre of revenue land in the region.
Poovar-Pozhikkara region is just 10 km away from the proposed monorail, coming up in the capital city and the area is well-connected to other places through railway and national highway, the forum said.
Marina is also another option as the world famed tourism hotspots Kovalam and Varkala are nearby, the forum said.
