Media reports quoted a senior executive of Posco India as saying that the company needs at least two years for fencing and land preparation for its proposed 8 mn tpa steel project and subsequently the first stage construction of the project needs three years.
So, the company expects to begin production at the mega steel plant near Paradip in Odisha’s Jagatsinghpur district in five years after it gets total required land, reports indicate.
The company has so far received about 1,700 acre land from the Odisha government for setting up the plant. Stating that the state-owned Industrial Infrastructure Development Corporation (IDCO) has initiated land clearance work after a gap of more than one year, he said the company was hopeful of land clearance soon.
The company plans to start work on the project after it receives the 2,700 acre of cleared land (land required for first stage of the project.
Posco-India signed a memorandum of understanding with the state government in 2005. But work has been delayed by several years.
It may be recalled that the project faced several hurdles one after the other including opposition from one section of politically affiliated people, pending environment clearances and continuous demands of various stakeholders which slowed down land acquisition process.
