As per media reports, most parts of the fast-growing Chennai suburban areas roads have developed potholes and citizens in the areas are being troubled a lot as the authorities concerned are not taking timely repairs to the roads. Residents say that the entire 14 km stretch of the Urapakkam GST road, leading to Vandalur and Kelambakkam roads, are filled with potholes, leading to frequent accidents.
The state highways department says that plying of heavily laden trucks were spoiling the roads in suburban areas of Chennai. The roads can withstand only up to 20-25 tonnes of weight. There is a constant movement of heavy vehicles like tippers carrying illegal stones quarried from the nearby hills. The roads were laid to provide good transportation but the movement of heavy vehicles has ruined them, say the government authorities.
Locals say that the state highway, responsible for the maintenance of battered roads, has absolved itself of all responsibilities related to maintenance.
