During April-May 2013-14, Paradeep Port Trust (PPT) handled 42.41 per cent more cargo volume at 11.55 million tonne (mn t) from 8.11 mn t handled in the year-ago period.
This enabled the port reach the second slot among all major ports in the country in terms of total cargo handled and also traffic growth achieved during the period.
In this period, coking coal traffic grew 23.87 per cent and thermal coal rose 47.33 per cent while iron ore traffic rose 329.24 per cent.
During May 2013, the port handled 5.74 mn t of cargo, 41.96 per cent higher than 4.04 mn t achieved in the same month of last fiscal. This includes 1.97 mn t of export cargo and the balance 3.77 mn t imported cargo.
During the same month, the port handled a record quantity of 40,613 tonne of pyroxenite.
