In VO Chidambaranar Port (VOC) in Tuticorin, coal imports surged at with a cargo volume of 106,17,791 million tonne (mt) handled in 2012-13. With this, the volume the port handled has surpassed the past record of 92,76,356 mt in the earlier year.

Sources in the port said that in the current financial (2013-14), the port saw an import volume of 52,69,983 mt of coal until August.

VOC port has also embarked on improvement projects to boost its capability through Public-Private Partnership (PPP) mode and awarded projects to the concessionaires to handle coal, copper concentrates, rock phosphate etc.
