This year, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will reconstruct roads in the city at a cost of Rs 1,200 crore. It will invite tenders soon for the same. The civic body has allotted Rs 900 crore to reconstruct major roads and Rs 300 crore for minor roads. In a move to fix responsibility, BMC has appointed one engineer for each road.

With 8 to 12 km of roads under the engineer, he/she will be responsible for their upkeep. The road engineers will have to survey roads designated to them and submit to the BMC a list of those that have to be reconstructed by May 15. BMC will then invite tenders for them.

BMC has appointed engineers at the ward level as road engineers for roads that are less than 30 feet wide (minor) and roads that are wider than 30 feet will be under the care of an engineer from a central agency.
