Reliance Jio Infocomm has signed a pact to share towers with Bharti Infratel, to launch its services across the country. Bharti Infratel has 35,000 towers and also 42 per cent share in Indus Towers
Bharti Ineratel Expansion
Bharti Infratel said it is looking at acquisition opportunities in India and overseas. The company, which is the tower unit of telecom major Bharti Airtel, is set to launch its initial public offering (IPO) on December 11 to raise up to Rs 4,533.60 crore. The proceeds from the IPO would be used to fund expansion plans as well as future acquisitions. Of the total 376,000 towers in India,Bharti Infratel has 80,656.
Mobile tower roll-out slow
The pace of roll-out of cellular towers has declined significantly to just 8,000 a year compared with 14,000 in the previous financial year. According to data available with the Department of Telecom, over 40,000 new towers were added in 2009-10. While there were 3.47 lakh towers on March 2011, this is expected to move up to 3.55 lakh by the end of the current year, a growth of only 2.3 percent.In comparison, the year-on-year growth rate in 2008 was over 60 percent.
