Trials have started for a new traffic plan at the Chennai airport that will significantly improve vehicle movements when implemented, reports Business Line. This new plan, which involves putting to use the newly constructed centre ramp, is likely to be open in two months.

Chennai airport installs solar panels
The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has installed solar panels on the cargo complex of Chennai airport, as part of its green initiative. The panels will take care of 80 per cent of the power requirement of the cargo section. The plant can generate approximately 5 MW.

AAI goes for expansion
State-run Airports Authority of India (AAI) will invest up to Rs 1,400 crore in further expansion of Chennai Airport and setting up an ATC tower at Kolkata Airport. This comes after the government dropped its privatisation plans.

Chennai airport New International Terminal is ready
The Airports Authority of India on August 6 stated that the new International Terminal at Chennai airport has been built at a cost of about Rs 2,000 crore. It added that the new terminal was scheduled to begin operations on August 7.
Assembly passes resolution to name terminal after MGR
Tamil Nadu has requested the Union government to name the second domestic terminal at the Chennai Airport after the former Chief Minister and the then popular hero actor MG Ramachandran. To this effect the Tamil Nadu Assembly passed a resolution. The State Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa moved the resolution in the Assembly.
Ten Kingfisher aircraft languish at Chennai airport
More than a month after the Airports Authority of India (AAI) asked Kingfisher Airlines to remove its 10 grounded aircraft that are taking up space at Chennai airport, the aircraft are still there. The debt-ridden airline stopped services in October last year. Back in 2008, Kingfisher used to operate 60 flights a day from Chennai. By mid-2012, this was down to 45 before operations stopped all together.
Terminals at Chennai airport opened
The new domestic and international terminals at the Chennai airport were opened for public use by Vice-President Hamid Ansari. The Airport Authority of India (AAI) built the terminals at a cost of Rs 2,000-crore to enhance capacity. The existing terminals had a capacity to handle six million domestic and three million international passengers.
