The toll plaza between Delhi and Gurgaon on the national highway is likely to be removed. The toll plaza has become contentious as users had to wait for long, resulting in traffic block. This also led to an intervention by the Punjab High Court last year. This was one of the options discussed in a meeting held between Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda and the Union Road Transport Minister CP Joshi in Delhi recently.

Stakeholders’ view elicited on regulator for road sector

Govt focuses on meeting 3,000-km target
To discuss performance in the highway sector in 2012-13, the Union Road Transport Minister CP Joshi held a review meeting on March 11, but sought to focus on meeting the ministry's target of constructing 3,000 km of highways. This year, contracts for developing just 879 kilometre (km) of highways have been awarded as opposed to the original target of 8,800 km and the record performance of 2011-12 when contracts for 6,644 km were awarded.

Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways CP Joshi has stressed on the need to migrate to electronic toll collection (ETC) and it should be done by March next year. As complaints against toll payments mount, pressure is rising on the government to hold highway developers responsible for providing basic service-level agreements, he added.

Govt hopes to award 6,000 km contracts under EPC mode
The Union government would be able to give contracts for more than 6,000 km this fiscal on getting certain procedural approvals, said the Union Road Transport and Highways Minister CP Joshi on January 28. Under the EPC model (engineering, procurement and construction), the government spends the entire money required to build roads which would be instrumental in attracting builders who are at present shying away from highways projects for want of funds, he said.
