Centre plans to develop a road regulatory authority

The Union government is striving to set up a road regulatory authority by consulting all the stakeholders.
The road sector needs a regulator to address challenges before it… Work is on towards developing a regulatory philosophy in consultation with all stakeholders, Union Road Transport and Highways Minister CP Joshi said.

Addressing a round table on regulatory authority for the road sector, Joshi said the consultation is needed to define the role and scope of this governing body. The Minister said efforts are being made to ensure there is no conflict or overlap when it comes to the regulators’ role and that of the other agencies.

Joshi hoped that the brainstorming at the round table will lead to formation of a robust regulatory body. Earlier this week, Finance Minister P Chidambaram in a Canada India Business Council meeting at Toronto had said the road regulatory authority would be set up within four months.
