India and Japan proposes to strengthen their cooperation in the shipping sector. In this connection a delegation under the leadership of Union Minister of Shipping Shri GK Vasan is visiting Japan from November 9-12th on an invitation from Akihiro Ohta, the Minister of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism of Government of Japan.

Vasan visits Japan to promote Indian ports
To discuss about increased utilisation of Indian ports, especially Chennai and Ennore, by Japan's business companies, the Union Shipping Minister GK Vasan, along with a delegation, is to discuss with the Japanese government and business community there. Vasan is scheduled to be in Japan from November 7 to 12 at the invitation of Akihiro Ohta, Japan Minister of Land, Infrastructure Transport and Tourism.
Lakshadweep to get 2 more vessels: Vasan
The Lakshadweep administration would get two more ships of 400-passenger capacity each, in addition to the 25 ships serving the islands, said Union Minister of Shipping GK Vasan. He said, 2 multi-purpose cargo vessels and an oil barge would also be acquired by the island administration.

Union Shipping Minister GK Vasan has said that the Chennai Port Trust is considering the Tamil Nadu Sailing Association's request to allot it an area on a long-term basis at a concessional rent for sailing activities.
Ennore Port presents Rs 40 cr dividend to govt
The Union Minister of Shipping GK Vasan was presented with a dividend cheque of Rs 40 crore by the Ennore Port (EPL) for the financial year 2012-13. The Chairman and Managing Director of the EPL MA Bhaskarachar presented the cheque to the Minister at a function in Chennai on September 17.

The Union Shipping Minister GK Vasan recently said that the falling value of rupee will stroÂngly affect port development works in the country and its shipping industry. Union Shipping Minister GK Vasan has stated that India has tremendous potential to become the next hub of ship building. He was speaking at the launch of INS Vikrant in Kochi on August 12. Vasan stressed the need for a vibrant shipbuilding industry and more shipyards. The Minister said that there are vibrant shipbuilding industries behind the growth of major economies like USA, some European countries, Japan and Korea.

Some key changes were made in the draft guidelines on free pricing for services in major ports following the change of secretary in the union shipping ministry.
DP World signs concession agreement with JNPT for gateway terminal
DP World and Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trus (JNPT) held a ceremonial signing of the concession awarded to DP World to construct and operate a new container terminal at the port. DP World received the Letter of Award for the new Nhava Sheva (India) Gateway Terminal project in November last year.
